In 2014, Insomniac Games released Sunset Overdrive; a wacky third-person game set in a post-apoplectic world that featured some of the weirdest weapons found in video games. When Sunset Overdrive was first released, it was an XBOX exclusive, and has been hailed as one of the most underrated exclusives of the XBOX One era, and was even featured on XBOX Game Pass in 2020. Insomniac has since become a part of the PlayStation Studio family after Sony purchased the company in February of 2020, with the purchase fans have long been expecting that Sunset Overdrive could finally make its way to the PlayStation ecosystem.

In a filing found by @Nibel a trademark for Sunset Overdrive was filed on April 26th, 2021. The expectation from this trademark filing is that this will be a remastered edition of the classic Insomniac IP, it’s important to note that even though they were purchased by Sony Insomniac still owns the IP and rights to Sunset Overdrive. As a huge fan of the game myself, I have long asked for this title to come to PlayStation. Sunset Overdrive is the perfect combination of game genres like a third-person shooter, extreme sports, and open world. I have played through the game 3 times now and each time I find myself enjoying the creativity that makes this game so unique.

When can PlayStation fans expect Sunset Overdrive Remastered

In a year like 2021 where Sony has been very hush over projects in development, I expect an announcement will be made in the rumored State of Play the week before E3. Sony has been rumored to be putting together a presentation similar to the one they did in June of 2020 when they unveiled the games coming out for the PS5. I think Sony will announce a release date for Horizon Forbidden West, showcase gameplay from God of War Ragnarok, and give a small teaser for Sunset Overdrive Remastered in the State of Play. As far as an actual release date is concerned; we have no idea if this game is “in the works” or if Sony is getting ahead of a future project. If I could propose an educated guess, I think it makes sense for a 2023 release date to set up a sequel to release the following year at the 10-year anniversary of the original game. Sony loves celebrating anniversaries and I think we are looking at a situation similar to Crash Bandicoot. Crash Bandicoot 4 It’s About Time released right after the remaster was brought to XBOX and the Nintendo Switch. Sony could still release a sequel to Sunset on XBOX but I think the smarter move is to make it a PlayStation Exclusive!
