The developer behind Gears 4 and 5, The Coalition, announced on 10 May, that they will be shifting to Unreal Engine 5 for all future developments. The team thanked their fans on the official Gears website and the team had this to say about using Unreal Engine 5. “As we look to future games, we’re excited to start shifting our resources to next-gen development using Unreal Engine 5. Gears of War has always been at the front of Unreal Engine development – as a breakout 720p title for Xbox 360 through last year’s 120FPS multiplayer update for Xbox Series X|S – and we’re excited to continue the tradition by developing on UE5 for multiple new projects in the coming years.”
In the same post the Coalition detailed the upcoming operations 7 and 8 which will include new characters, events and maps that will last throughout the year. The Coalition stated that operations 7 and 8 will be the last thing they do before moving to UE5 and there be no new announcements in the foreseeable future. For anyone hoping that Gears 6 was going to be announced at this year’s E3 may have to wait for next year’s E3 or later.
